Sign Language Quran Installed at Masjid Istiqlal Installed at Masjid Istiqlal: A Collaboration with Hear Me Foundation for Inclusivity in Worship

On the first Friday of Ramadan, precisely on March 7, 2025, Masjid Istiqlal in Jakarta made history with the installation of the Sign Language Quran display screen in the main hall of the mosque. Hear Me Foundation, as a partner of BSI Maslahat “Sahabat Kebaikan,” collaborated with the Indonesian Muslim Deaf Association (ATMI) for the installation of the Sign Language Quran at Masjid Istiqlal. This installation marks a significant milestone in efforts to provide inclusive worship access for all Muslims in Indonesia.

The Sign Language Quran: An Innovation for Deaf Congregants
The Sign Language Quran is an innovative solution that makes it easier for Deaf congregants to understand the recitation of the Al-Quran in a more accessible and effective way. The Al-Quran Isyarat screen uses sign language animations to convey the messages of the Quran, allowing Deaf individuals to engage with and understand the Quran. As part of the collaboration with Hear Me Foundation, Masjid Istiqlal has implemented this technology to create a more inclusive and welcoming worship space for the Deaf community.

Collaboration with Hear Me Foundation: Enhancing Accessibility
This collaboration in installing the Sign Language Quran is a tangible step toward bridging the information gap for the Deaf community. It is hoped that, in the future, more mosques and places of worship across Indonesia will adopt similar technology to support inclusivity in worship. This effort aligns with the broader mission of Hear Me Foundation to create a more inclusive and just world, especially for the Deaf community in all aspects of life, including in religious practices. 

Inclusivity in Worship at Istiqlal Mosque
Istiqlal Mosque, known as a symbol of the greatness of Islam in Indonesia, continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting inclusivity in worship. In addition to the installation of the Sign Language Quran Masjid Istiqlal also provides a special prayer space for Deaf congregants at the front of the mosque so they can clearly see the sign language interpreter translating the Friday sermon. The provision of this special prayer space is a concrete example of the inclusivity implemented at Masjid Istiqlal to create an inclusive and welcoming worship environment for Deaf congregants.

“MAKNA TANPA BATAS”
The steps taken by Masjid Istiqlal and Hear Me Foundation reflect a profound value of inclusivity that ensures the meaning of worship is not limited to only a few individuals. Al-Quran Isyarat and the provision of a special prayer space for Deaf congregants symbolize that worship is a right for every individual, with no limitations—whether physical or social.
Through this collaboration, Istiqlal Mosque and Hear Me Foundation demonstrate that worship is a spiritual journey that must be accessible to all, without exception. The installation of the Sign Language Quran on the main floor of Istiqlal Mosque and the provision of facilities for Deaf congregants are significant steps in creating a more inclusive worship environment, uniting the community in diversity and respecting each individual.
